UNILAG Vice-Chancellor Has Issued A Statement Amid The Indefinite Closure Of The Campus

On Wednesday, July 14th, 2021, the University of Lagos, UNILAG, declared that the campus will be closed indefinitely from Thursday, July 15th, due to the spread of COVID-19.

The institution instructed students to vacate the resident hall, stating that courses would now be done online.

According to a statement from the Dean of Students Affairs, Mr. Ademola Adeleke, titled "Immediate closure of hostels to prevent the spread of Covid-19 on campus," the school administration said the move was taken to prevent the disease from spreading.

However, the Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe has issued a statement amid the Indefinite closure of the campus.

"We resumed physical classes in May 2021 when COVID-19 infection in Lagos seemed a lot more controllable and we continued to enforce the COVID-19 protocols in all the teaching and learning spaces as well as the student halls of residence."

"In addition, the COVID-19 vaccination was made available to the staff and students through the support of the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Council."

"As at now, with this new wave of the virus, some of our students who have tested positive have been sent to the appropriate designated facilities in the State, and contact tracing has enabled us to identify those who have had exposure and directed them to isolate."

"We had a meeting today to discuss the way forward to and to curb the spread of the virus on campus, we have approved that all students vacate the halls of residence by 12.00 pm on Thursday indefinitely." "Lectures will resume on the 26th July 2021 Virtually," he added.

"I enjoin all staff as well as students to follow all COVID-19 protocols and follow the directions of the campus administrators at all levels."
