Meet Dr. Alvan Ikoku The First Nigerian Classroom Teacher To Be On Naira Note





Dr. Alvan Ikoku was born on August 1st, 1900 in Arochukwu in present-day Abia State.
He became a teacher at the age of 20, and at 32 years, he established the First indigenous private secondary school in Nigeria.

In 1955, he became the national president of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT).

During this period he met resistance From the British colonial government when he proposed a uniform educational system for Nigerians.

In 1962, he Introduced The ‘Education Bill of Rights’. He proposed that, primary school education should be free for six years nationwide in Nigeria.

In 1976, then Military leader, Olusegun Obasanjo accepted the ‘Education Bill of Rights’.

That is why till today, Nigerian children at primary school level still receive Free education.

Surely, Dr. Alvan Ikoku is a true Nigerian Hero.
